Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
